Cryptographic & Knowledge
Management Glossary.
Clear definitions of the cryptography, distributed systems, and knowledge architecture concepts powering the Foxcolab Notes platform.
Zero-Knowledge Encryption (E2EE)
A security architecture in which data is encrypted and decrypted exclusively on end-user client devices. The service provider stores only encrypted ciphertext and possesses zero cryptographic keys, rendering provider-side inspection mathematically impossible.
Conflict-Free Replicated Data Type (CRDT)
A specialized data structure that enables multiple replicas of a document to be edited concurrently and offline without a central coordinating server. Mutations merge deterministically without data loss or conflicting copy files.
Bi-Directional Backlink
A two-way associative connection between two documents. When Document A references Document B using [[wiki-link]] syntax, Document B automatically registers a reciprocal mention in its incoming links panel.
Client-Side Key Derivation
A security mechanism where encryption keys are derived directly on the user's physical device from their master passphrase. Keys are never transmitted over the internet or accessible to central servers.
Zettelkasten Method
A knowledge management framework pioneered by sociologist Niklas Luhmann based on atomic, interconnected note cards. Ideas are organized associatively via cross-references rather than hierarchical file folders.
KaTeX
A fast, client-side rendering engine that displays mathematical notation in web browsers. It compiles LaTeX syntax directly into scalable HTML and SVG without layout shifts or network round trips.
Local-First Software
An architectural design principle where user data is stored primarily on the physical local device, allowing instantaneous read/write execution without internet connectivity, while synchronizing seamlessly in the background.
Personal Knowledge Management (PKM)
A structured process for collecting, organizing, synthesizing, and retrieving personal ideas, documents, and research to create a cohesive 'second brain'.
Knowledge Graph View
An interactive visual representation of an entire notebook workspace, showing interconnected documents as nodes and cross-references as dynamic links.
Inverted Search Index
A database index mapping words to their exact locations within documents. In Foxcolab Notes, this index is computed in-memory on the client device to provide sub-10ms full-text search with zero network leakage.
